Business is great, why continue improving leadership and management skills?

To insure you don’t fall into crisis mode or find yourself floating along. So you are ready when the right opportunity presents itself. And you can be prepared when something not so good happens.

Business leaders, managers, and professionals typically fall into three distinct outlooks regarding their state: Crisis mode, all’s good and floating along mode, and lastly, aspiring to become excellent.

When people find themselves in crisis mode, they fall into firefighting, fixing, or maybe scale back and protect themselves. Sometimes they look deeper into the cause to avoid this situation again. Often they do not.

The vast majority of people seem to feel that all’s good and float along in their position. They feel no incentive to improve. They are “fine,” that is, until a problem occurs. When problems occur they jump back into crisis mode.

Lastly, a very distinct group of people aspire to become excellent. These people aspire to excellence even when business is good, projects work well, and revenue and profits are growing. 

What do these aspiring people focus on?

They focus on five must dos to continue improving leadership skills.

Crispen basic management skills. These skills fall into categories of delegation, accountability, goal management, task assignment, running meetings, communication and collaboration.

Tighten management of core tasks. Core tasks need excellent delegation and accountability. These core tasks often focus on specific metrics and processes key to business and project success.

Improve attitudes and beliefs toward employees. Identify those that stall out the company and those that propel the company forward. Weed out the non-useful attitudes.

Implement company-wide (or group-wide) culture development. Often organizations, whether small or large, benefit from teamwork and employees feeling like they are on a winning team at an excellent company.

Get clear about what is in scope and what is not in scope. This is a get focused on what’s important skill.
